3R Fair 2026 in Fribourg: Presenting research, driving implementation forward

The 3R Fair 2026 in Fribourg brought together researchers and stakeholders, offering a valuable opportunity to discuss the research projects of NRP 79 and to address specific questions related to their implementation.
On 15 April 2026, the 3R Fair “Research Meets Practice” organised by National Research Programme 79 “Advancing 3R” took place at Forum Fribourg. The event brought together researchers and representatives from government, industry, academia and NGOs, providing a practical platform for networking. At the same time, the fair trialled a new format that focused on direct dialogue between researchers and stakeholders. Within this framework, projects could be discussed in depth and specific questions regarding application, potential partnerships and next steps could be clarified together – an exchange that proved particularly valuable for both sides.
For nearly four years, research teams have been developing innovative approaches within the programme, based on the 3Rs Principles (Replace, Reduce, Refine). The fair coincides with a key milestone in the programme: of the 27 projects, 20 will complete their research in 2026, leading to the final phase of the programme. This phase will be dedicated to synthesising the results, as well as disseminating and implementing them.
“All familiar faces”
Presentations of research projects were at the heart of the fair. Teams presented their work using demonstrations, videos, clear summaries and practical examples, enabling participants to grasp the current state of research as well as its main findings and recommendations. Many opted for creative formats to make their projects more accessible and engaging, notably through illustrated posters, original visuals or quizzes; one team even chose a comic strip as their medium. Some teams also brought objects related to their work, offering visitors a more tangible experience.
The direct exchange on site made it possible to reflect together on the next steps for strengthening the 3Rs principles in Switzerland. At the same time, it became clear how the individual research teams have developed into an active community over the last few years. As Herwig Grimm, President of the research programme, so eloquently put it: “You look around and see nothing but familiar, friendly faces.”
An in-depth analysis of the subject and a sharing of experiences
A highlight of the day were the themed tours focusing on innovation, legislation, and ethics & society. Led by experts in the field, the tours offered specific insights into selected issues and fostered interdisciplinary exchange within the 3R community.
The 3R Fair, under the theme of ‘research meets practice’, focused above all on fostering dialogue between researchers and practitioners, as well as mutual learning. It thus provided a forum for discussion of research findings, with a view to putting them into context and translating them into practical applications.
